I am currently working on theoretical and historical research in International Relations (IR).
My theoretical research focuses on traditions of political thought and international theory. I am currently investigating the works of Adam Watson (1914-2007) and Martin Wight (1913-1972), two key ‘English School’ authors in IR. I am also interested in the work of Early Modern jurist Johannes Althusius (1563-1638) and the ‘Neocalvinist’ tradition of political thought derived from it.
In terms of empirical research, my general interest is in the connection between ethics, religion and political practice. I am currently assisting a project on ‘God and the European Union’ at the Kirby Laing Institute. I have recently turned my historical research from the Early Modern period (especially the Peace of Westphalia) to the Ancient Near East. I am investigating the role of covenant diplomacy in the construction of order in that international society.
